Epic Web3 speaker lineup has solid gender diversity, a rarity in tech

Women kicking ass in the blockchain space will feature prominently at Lisbon conference June 9

As a media partner of the Epic Web3 Conference, I’m thrilled to see that it will avoid the problem of “manels” that predominate at other tech gatherings.

You know the situation: Panels consisting only of men, as if half the earth’s population isn’t helping to push innovation forward. Groan.

The problem is symptomatic of a broader under-representation of women in the tech workforce in general. CIO magazine recently covered the issue, citing data from research heavyweights like McKinsey & Co., Accenture, and America’s National Science Foundation that paint a bleak, complicated picture of gender diversity in tech.

Women aren’t majoring in computer science as much, don’t get paid as much as men doing the same jobs when they are hired into the tech industry, and often aren’t retained by companies at the same rate as men over time, CIO reports.

Specific numbers for the narrower sub-category of blockchain organizations are hard to come by. But the problems are widely regarded to be similar as elsewhere in the tech workforce. That’s unfortunate, considering that up to 55% of the investors in cryptocurrency are women in some regions of the world, according to a global report by the nonprofit Women in Blockchain.

On a happier note, it’s also true that there are individual women making huge contributions at blockchain companies worth celebrating. The Epic Web3 Conference will highlight several of them prominently:

  • Isabel Gonsalez, co-founder of the Proof of Attendance Protocol will participate in a question-and-answer session about mass adoption of blockchain tools.
  • Maria Kontinnen, marketing director at Decentraland will be on a panel about the potential of the metaverse, as will Sandy Carter, senior vice president and channel chief at Unstoppable Domains.
  • Nadia Alvarez, Head of Growth at MakerDAO will share her insights about marketing decentralized autonomous organizations.
  • Clara Martucci, Director of Social Media at Star Atlas: Bear Market Community Building: how to maximize engagement with virtual launch events
  • Stephanie Bell, Head of Customer Experience at Uniswap : Revolutionizing DEXs: How to Create a Seamless User Experience
  • Maria Kontinnen, Marketing Director at Decentraland: Experimenting with community art curation in Web3 — world’s first national gallery in the metaverse
